the Cool Girl Capsule

White Button Down Shirt

A white button down shirt is simply magic. To me, there is nothing more satisfying than throwing on a crisp white shirt and a pair of jeans. Going to run an errand? Throw on a Birkenstock. Going on a date? Wear a sexy heel. Meeting friends for lunch? Wear a loafer. This simple outfit formula takes you anywhere you need to go!

Opt for the more oversized fit for that effortlessly cool borrowed from the boy’s style. The best shirt I’ve tried lately is the one linked below by Citizens of Humanity – perfectly oversized and the cut on the side makes it the most flattering loose fit.

Straight Leg Light Denim

Agolde and Levi’s make my favorite options. If you want to be really cool buy yourself some vintage Levi’s – I don’t even want to share this because I like to keep some secrets but I’m feeling generous today – this is the best Etsy shop for vintage Levi’s. Sign up for their email and they let you know about new stock!

Trench

The ultimate trench is the one Rosie is wearing from Wardrobe.NYC a girl can dream right? However, no need to spend a ton of money on this their are great options at all price points.

Oversized Crewneck Sweater

Acne Studios makes the ultimate oversized cool girl sweater. I feel it’s 100% worth the splurge. I love styling this layered with a white button-down, a suit pant, and a loafer. Sophisticated and smart.

This is also perfect to wear over a slip dress in a matching color. Which segues us perfectly into the next item below.

Solid Slip Dress

People often tell me this trend is hard to pull off and I’m here to tell you you’re wrong. You don’t settle on the first pair of jeans you try, do you? Well, you shouldn’t settle on the first slip dress you try either! They are all created differently and while it might take a try or four to nail the fit, it’s worth your time to find one that works for your body. Here’s why… you can wear it to work with a blazer, on vacation, to brunch, girls night/date night, and it can be worn with diamonds for cocktail attire.

Wear it with a blazer and booties

Layer a sweatshirt over it

Wear it with an oversized turtleneck sweater

The best lazy outfit award goes to this slip dress and birks.

Style it with a matching cardigan

Pair it with a trench

Tie a short sleeve tee on top

Try the oversized blazer trend

Cocktail attire!

The Suit

Perfect T-Shirt

Let’s be real buying an expensive white t-shirt just isn’t realistic for me. Their lifespan tends to be short. With my coffee and wine habit, I’m bound to get a stain. So when I found out that Leia Sfez (pictured above) favorite white tees are the $15 U Neck Crew from Uniqlo I stocked up. I also love the Z-Supply T-shirts at under $40 the price is right.

The Brenton Stripe

Icons like Audrey Hepburn and Andy Warhol were known to rock the Brenton Stripe. It’s classic, cool, and super versatile. Wear it under a blazer for a chic dressed-up look or pair it was vintage Levis and sneakers for an awesome daytime outfit. My favorite is La Ligne Lean Lines Tee. The label is the lovechild of two former Vogue editors Valerie Boster and Meredith Melling Burke, pictured sporting in the Lean Lines Tee above.

Classic Cream Turtleneck

I’ve been dreaming about this perfect turtleneck sweater ever since Rosie posted it a few weeks ago – It’s by The Row, of course, so it’s out of my budget.

Chic c’est la vie!

Do you feel like you’ve watched everything on Netflix worth binging? Same. So, recently I turned to YouTube. I started with Architectural Digest home tours, it’s basically MTV cribs for glamorous grown ups. Dakota Johnson and Lenny Kravtiz are by far by favorites. Then to my delight, it led me to the Vogue Paris YouTube channel which has been my favorite discovery of 2021. I just can’t figure out why the French are so damn chic! It’s in their genes, and they all wear the best jeans.

Anyways, it led me to discover Nina Koltchitskaia, a Russian artist living in Paris with her composer husband in a tres romantique petit apartment. Her paintings have a Van Gogh like color palette with touches of Matisse figure drawings. However, her art was not the thing that stood out to me most, it was her unbelievable Parisienne style. Watch her apartment tour below!

This sweater above is Tricot, another amazing discovery to come out of this video. I need it all!

I will track this dress down to purchase one day!

Above dress is also Cecilie-Bahnsen.

Her Sea New York Sweater is amazing and jeans are Rouje! They will definitely be my next denim purchase when I have places to wear denim.

Below are the jeans she’s wearing in the first image. Never be afraid of buying statement denim – throw it on with a white tee or crewneck sweater and it looks like you spent hours thinking about what to wear, when in reality you just have that French girl je ne sais quoi!

Red Celine bag and Celine ring are all finds from The Real Real. A girl can dream right?

And now you know…

the INTERIOR EDIT

Design #1

My friend Kelly is a Boss B that lives in NYC. She has a gorgeous upper east side apartment with her husband Tim and golden doodle Dolly, but no time to decorate it. So, she asked me to help! I love to think about styling interiors the same way I think about my building my wardrobe, a mix of vintage pieces with functional classics and trend-forward accessories. She already had this gorgeous classic Arhaus sofa, but wanted everything else in the room to feel fresh and updated! We agreed that neutral tones with pops of color would be the inspiration.

I love to look at sites like Chairish, 1st Dibs, and Etsy for one of a kind pieces. CB2 and Lulu and Georgia are killing it when it comes to more modern functional pieces. I’m a huge fan of Sarah Sherman Samuels interior aesthetic and love looking at her portfolio for inspiration! She does an amazing job with high/low pieces and her spaces feel so livable. Her rug collection for Lulu and Georgia is simply divine. She’s a must-follow on Instagram if you don’t already.

Which design should she choose!? 1, 2, or 3?

Design #2

Design #3

Spoiler, she bought the coffee table from design 1, and the chair from design 3, so we’re working on filling in the rest! A great excuse to get to NYC asap to help pick out the finishing touches.

Do you have a space you need help with? Let me know how I can be of service! Shop pieces from these designs below.

the après ski EDIT

Aritzia Super Puff

I’m heading to Utah for a two-week ski adventure at the end of January so naturally, I’m scoping out chic looks for the slopes. You all know my love for all things Fairisle so it seems like this Sweaty Betty layer base set is a match made in Après-Ski heaven. I love the navy paired with the red puffer to set you apart from everyone else on the mountain wearing boring black. Red was often a common color carried throughout Slim Aarons ski photography and I think it’s the perfect contrast between the white snow and crisp blue ski. With no clouds in sight, don’t forget your SPF, especially on your lips! I found this Organic tinted lip balm with SPF 30 in firecracker by Coola that I love! Gives you a nice sheer red tint. Highly recommend.

Enjoy the images below of the glory days of après. Where the pants were tight, sweaters were bright, and the champagne flowed freely.

This year, the Rocky Mountains, next year the Swiss Alps.

Rocky’s Recs – Hydration Station

Dry skin for winter? Groundbreaking.

I’ll keep this one simple. If you’re feeling flaky try these products/devices to rehydrate:

Facial Steamer:– During quarantine, when I could only pretend to be at the spa, this device became my best friend. When I use this, I wash my face, spray a little hydrating mist (see below), steam, mask (such as the hydrating mask below), and then do my usual, evening skin routine before bed.

Hydration Mist– Spray this on before steaming or whenever you want to, honestly.

Hydrating B5 mask– A recent addition to my routine! There’s also a serum I’ve been eyeing – this Hydrating B5 Gel by SkinCeuticals

PowerGlow Peel: – I prefer chemical exfoliation rather than physical exfoliation (just say no to harsh scrubs) and these are my favorite peels to help increase cellular turnover (AKA get rid of dead skin).

The Dewy Skin Cream Plumping & Hydrating Moisturizer– Really enjoy the consistency of this moisturizer and feel like it also color corrects, so I only use during the day.

Cleansing Body Oil:– I don’t have sensitive skin, but love that this cleansing oil is super hydrating and doesn’t have a scent, and isn’t Necessaire (because I know we’re all sick of seeing that shit).

Hydraboost Body Butter– Favorite body lotion of all time. They call it ‘body butter,’ but the consistency is definitely more of a ‘lotion.’ Just try it. It’s great. They also have a Vitamin C version that’s on my list to try.

All of that said, you always want to consult an expert to figure out what’s right for your skin and your goals. If you’re local to Chicago, there’s nothing better (or more hydrating) than a Hydrafacial (and I always add a dermaplane) from Holly at The Fitz. I also do whatever Dr. Samantha Conrad at Conrad Peterson Dermatology tells me to and so should you.

Wishing you all dewy skin,

Rocky

Jack’s Wife Freda Green Shakshuka Recipe

I know it’s basic to say this but I miss Brunch. I get so much joy from sitting with a friend gossiping and paying too much for a fancy egg dish and a glass of wine or three. A slight buzz before noon on a cold Chicago Saturday, what’s not to love?

Fall of 2019 while shopping in Soho I stopped into Jack’s Wife Freda and solo dined. Another way I love to enjoy brunch. If you’ve never dined alone you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s the best way to focus on the food, atmosphere, and toast to yourself, a form of self-care if you will. Take an Instagram picture without annoying the table and people watch to your heart’s desire. Highly recommend. Anyway, I ordered the above Shakshuka and I loved it so much I’ve made it at home a few times this year. It always brings back great memories of shopping and sipping indoors, pre-covid. This recipe is perfect between Christmas and the new year when you have some extra time, why not make an extra brunch? Enjoy!

Green Shakshuka

1 large Spanish onion

6 garlic cloves

2 tbsp olive oil

1/2 pounds tomatillos

1 green bell pepper

1 jalapeño chili

1/2 cup packed fresh cilantro leaves

1 tsp coriander

1 tsp cumin

1-3 tablespoons hot sauce

1-2 eggs per person

Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Toasted challah or brioche for serving

How to Make It

1. Preheat the oven to 300°F.

2. Peel and quarter the onion and place with the garlic cloves in a small baking dish. Drizzle with the olive oil and ½ teaspoon of the salt. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes, or until very soft when pierced with a knife. (The onion and garlic can be prepared ahead of time.)

3. In a large bowl, soak the tomatillos in warm water to peel off the outer husk, then cut in half. Cut the stem from the bell pepper, discard the seeds, and cut into quarters. Also cut the stem from the jalapeno, discard the seeds, and quarter.

4. Place the peeled tomatillos, bell pepper, jalapeno, and cilantro leaves in a food processor with the roasted onion and garlic. Process until very smooth; it will have a salsa-like consistency.

5. Transfer to a medium saucepan. Add the coriander, cumin, and remaining 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the tomatillo sauce is heated through. Be careful not to cook too long or your sauce will discolor and the taste will change. Add 1 tablespoon of hot sauce at a time until you’ve hit your desired spice level.

6. To assemble the shakshuka: Oil a cast-iron pan and set it over low heat. Crack the desired number of eggs into the pan and cover. Allow the eggs to cook sunny-side up until the whites are fully cooked but the yolks remain soft (you can of course cook the yolks through if that is your preference).

7. Once the eggs are cooked, liberally spoon the shakshuka sauce on top of the eggs and garnish with chopped parsley. Serve with toasted challah or French brioche.
